3 Simple Tips For Teaching Your Dog To Sit

1.  Treat to sit: hold your dogs favorite in your hand and get your dogs attention. While saying sit lower the treat towards the ground and towards the back of your dog. This movement will naturally push your dog into a sitting position. Once your dog sits reinforce this good behavior by giving them the treat accompanied by verbal and touch acknowledgment. 

Repeat the process by moving to a new spot and repeating. This helps teach the command no matter where you are regardless of the setting.

2. Respectful greetings: one of the things none dog lovers hate the most is when a dog excitedly approaches them and hyperly jumps or paws at them. You can teach your dog to greet you and strangers by sitting down before engagement. Dogs crave attention every-time your dog approaches wait with your hands in your pocket until it sits. Then pull out a treat and reward the good behavior. Once your dog had mastered this you can change from rewarding with a treat to rewarding with affection.  This will not only increase the overall bond you have with your dog but it will eliminate dependency on treat rewarded obedience.

3. Loyalty love based: now that you have weaned your dog from needing treats to be obedient you can use love, respect and loyalty to better train your dog. Using hand signals accompanied by noise can train your dog non verbal commands. This can be very beneficial for hunting and game dogs. Reward all good behavior with loads of affection and acknowledgment. This will help build love and respect from your dog.

Remember that teaching your dog any command takes time and lots of patience. Do not let your frustrations get the best of you as you train your dog. Take breaks between sessions to let you and your dog bond from simple heartfelt fun.
