There have been studies that have shown the outcome of children with odd names.  Though your dog knows no different from the name “Einstein” to “Idiot”, what may affect him is how others interpret your dog’s name and treat your dog. How strangers, friends, or anyone treats them other than you may have a result in their characteristics.

Unusual Names

Often times, unusual names reflect the owner. Those who choose unusual names want their dog to stand out and therefore will treat their dog as if they want them to stand out. Teaching them odd tricks or ways to entertain those around them. They may love to share how they came up with that name. The owner of the dog with the unusual name welcomes attention.

Common Names

Choosing a name for your dog that is a common name, may show that your desire for your dog is for them to blend in and feel like a normal dog. This may be a reflection of your personality that you do not want your dog to stand out or get questions every time you tell a stranger your dog’s name. You probably like to go with the flow.

Low Expectation Name

If you were to name your dog a degrading word that you think is funny, it may indicate that you have a sense of humor. Watch out though because how you see your dog representing your sense of humor and it is completely harmless, it may indicate to other’s that your dog deserves less than complete respect.

Pronunciation

Choosing a name that is hard to pronounce can indicate a few things about you.

A) You speak another language and you want your dog to have a name from that language. Telling people your dog’s name from another language will allow them to know that you know another language and may come from a different culture.

B) You want to see people just try to pronounce your dog’s name just so you can correct them and sound incredibly intelligent.

C) You are incredibly intelligent and use big words all the time and hope by naming your dog a difficult to pronounce word, you may further educate those around you by increasing their vocabulary.

D) All of the above.

Odd Spelling

If you took a common name and made it unusual by changing the spelling then you are probably a fence sitter on wanting to blend in and wanting to stand out. This is a way that people may think that you are just Jane Doe, but deep down inside you are Jain Dow. People will only know of your craziness when they have the opportunity to write or see written your dog’s name. ChRleee vs. Charlie, will hold a future with a whole lot of spelling every letter out.

Long vs. Short

If your dog’s name is long like “Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo”, you may like to talk. You like to talk so much that you like to spend at least 10 seconds saying your dog’s name each time you call it.

If your dog’s name is short like “Chang”, you might get some help if you ever fall in a well.  Read Tikki Tikki Tembo and you will see what I mean.

Nicknames

Some people name their dog a name, fully aware that they will never call it by that name. You are probably someone who is really good at having back-up for everything. This way when you call your dog, “Kim!” and they don’t answer then you’ve got some back up so they know you’re really serious, “KIMBERLY!”

Presidential Dog Names

Presidential families had a knack for choosing unique names for their pets. Here are a few of our favorites over the past 60 years.

1. Yuki: President Lyndon Johnson’s pup was a favorite amongst visitors and diplomats alike. President Johnson spent as much time with his dog as he could. Here he is sitting on a fence with Yuki in arms.

2. King Timahoe: Is a very boss name, and belonged to President Richard Nixons Irish Setter. Tall, fast and powerful  they make wonderful family dogs who are loyal and great with kids.

3. Liberty: After the Watergate Scandal and the resignation of President Nixon, Gerald Ford set out to earn the trust of Americans by adding stability to the presidency. With the help of his trusty Golden retriever Liberty he did just that. Liberty continued to win favor in the eyes of Americans when she gave birth to 9 puppies. Not only is Liberty a very unique name for a Dog, but it also had special meaning as the dog of a President.

4. Buddy: Found his way into the oval office in President Clinton’s second term as president. The chocolate Labrador loved to perform and show off for camera crews and reports by posing and letting them take pictures. The Labrador has long been an American favorite and was a perfect for the white house. While Buddy may not be a unique name he was a unique dog.

I love these presidential dogs because they have special meaning to not only this great country but to those families who have led this country for decades. While much of a first families life is not their own the ability to bond with a dog who is completely loyal and loves unconditionally is a great way to remember life before all of the spotlight.

Choose a name you like. Choosing a unique dog name is almost as serious as naming a child.  Your dog could be with you for many years and is going to become part of the family.  Pick a name you really like because you are going to be using it a lot.

Pick a one or two syllable name. The reason you want to choose a one or two syllable name for your dog is that it will be easier for your dog to respond to.  Also, it is nice to make it an easier name to say.  If you choose a longer name with more syllables choose a nickname or shorter name.  Alexander could be Alex or even Al.

Change it if you don’t like it after the first couple days.  It takes time for a dog to learn its name so doing worry about changing it in the first couple days or weeks if you don’t like it.  The sooner the better though, because the more you use the name the more attached you are going to become to a name you might not like.

Don’ts

Don’t use a name that sounds like a command.  There are only a few names you need to be careful of like “Fletch” for fetch and “Shea” for stay. Think of the commands you might use for your dog and make sure the name you choose doesn’t sound like one of those commands.  Your dog will be very confused.

Don’t use a name that sounds like someone else’s name in the household.  If you have a Larry in the home don’t name your dog Jerry.  It will be confusing for the dog and Larry.  I’m sure you can imagine what could happen.

Don’t use offensive terms for dog names.  My sister named her dog Bouger.  I’ll give her props for choosing a unique dog name but our very proper mother didn’t like visiting her because the word Bouger was being used all the time.  Don’t use any names that are swearing words or dirty.  You might think it is funny for a day or two but after a while you are going to just sound like a vulgar person.

Don’t change an adult dog’s name.  If you get a dog from an animal shelter and they know the name, stick to that name or a similar sounding name.  Dogs get attached to there name. You could change it to a similar sounding name.  Charlie can easily be changed to be Harley.

Labradors are one of he most popular breed of dogs alive and for good reason. Labradors are very smart, athletic and great for families. My first dog was a Labrador named Blaze, technically he was a labrador and golden retriever mix. He was a huge dog very strong and athletic. We lived in the mountains and he loved to roam and explore, chase wildlife and everything in between. I remember taking him down to the river near by to play fetch, and hiking with him.

Saying Goodbye

When he passed it was really hard for me. The year before he had been hit by a car and needed some major surgeries that gave him heart problems. He recovered over time with a mostly robotic leg but the trauma led to heart problems. He took medicine and we had another great year together, but unfortunately his body had taken all it could.

I always knew that I would get another Labrador, when the time was right.

Meet Molly

Molly is a mutt, labrador mixed with something else, both of her parents are labradors but one of them must have some mixed lines as you can see on her paws. While Molly may not be the most unique name for a dog you can think of it was her. We debated on a whole ton of names and finally settled on Molly. She is the best tempered dog I have ever known. She is extremely kind and cautious with kids, in fact she and my son are a little bit obsessed with each other. She never barks at anything and loves to cuddle.

Molly like all retrievers loves to swim and play in the water. The second she hears running water she heads straight for it. I run her everyday with the ATV and I think it is one of the best parts of her day.

I love Labradors because they are great for so many applications, they are incredibly smart and well mannered which makes them great for families. They are fabulous outdoor dogs who were breed to hunt, they have fabulous noses and easy to train. They have a lot of energy and do need to be exercised regularly. While I love Labradors they are just one of the many breeds I hope to own in my lifetime. What do you love about labradors, let us know in the comments.
